WINCH  BRAKE  TEST FORM  ( BHC )  RENDERING

(1) (2) (3) (4)
WINCH             BRAKE CAPACITY
POSITION NO.    R(cm)   D(cm)   P(kg/cm2)   (Tons)
FWD  PORT(NO. 1)   17   59   220   33.74
FWD  STBD.(NO. 2)   17   59   300   46.02
AFT  PORT(NO. 3)   17   59   270   41.41
AFT  AFT.(NO. 4)   17   59   270   41.41
AFT  STBD.(NO. 5)   17   59   300   46.02

Column (1)  R : Distance between centre of drum and first layer of rope.

Column (2)  D : Distance between centre of drum and jack..

Column (3)  P : Pressure reading when drum begins to drift (must be read-off during test)

furthermore, A : Piston area of jack (given in jack specification in cm2)

44.2 X D(2) X P(3)

Column (4)  Brake Holding Force =  A X (3) X (2)  =  TONS     (1)  X  1000

The result in Column 4 should equal to the required brake force and a mark attached to the brake screw handle
stating the degree to which the brake handle screw must be fastened to obtain the required brake force. If  the
result in column 4 is different from the required, the brake may be re-adjusted and the test repeated until the
required brake force is obtained, and the corresponding screw tighness marked.

WORKED EXAMPLE :

Given that the distance D (I.e. distance between centre of drum and jack) is D = 59 cm

and R = 17cm  (I.e. distance between centre of drum and first layer of rope)

once the above measurements for D(cm) and R(cm) have been taken, and the brake screw tightened ,the force
applied by  the jack may be gradually increased.

If the pressure reading just before the brake begins to slip is say P = 160 kg/cm2

Also, assuming that the piston area of the jack ,as is the case on the "EIRINI L",IS A = 44.2 cm2

then , F(TONS) = 44.2 x 220 x 59   =  33.74 TONS

             17.0  X  1000
